About the Forestry Division
The Forestry Division is responsible for implementing forestry law, managing forest resources, and supporting sustainable forestry practices in Tonga. Our mission is to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of Tonga’s forest resources for present and future generations.
Our Key Duties Include:
- Administering and enforcing forest laws and regulations
- Nursery production for seedlings to support food security, coastal protection, and timber supply
- Conducting forest inventory and planning for sustainable resource management
- Establishing and managing forest reserves and protected areas
- Supporting tree planting initiatives and community reforestation programs
- Providing extension and technical services to the public
- Promoting research and education in sustainable forestry practices
Structural Organization
The Forestry Division operates under a structured organization to effectively carry out its mandate across the Kingdom of Tonga.
Administration & Policy
Oversees policy development, planning, and administration of forestry laws and regulations.
Field Operations
Manages on-ground activities including nursery operations, forest management, and extension services.
Research & Development
Conducts forestry research, species trials, and develops sustainable practices.
Leadership
Mr. Heimuli Likiafu leads the Forestry Division with over 20 years of experience in forestry management and conservation. Under his leadership, the division has implemented key initiatives in sustainable forest management, community engagement, and climate change adaptation.
He holds a Master’s Degree in Forest Resources Management and has represented Tonga in numerous regional and international forestry forums.
Mr. Likiafu’s vision is to balance the economic, social, and environmental values of Tonga’s forests for the benefit of all Tongans.
