Food Division

The Food Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forests (MAFF) is responsible for ensuring the safety, quality, and sustainability of food produced and consumed within the Kingdom of Tonga. The division’s work contributes to national food security, nutrition improvement, and public health by enforcing standards and promoting best practices in food production, processing, and trade.

Our Core Responsibilities

  • Develop and enforce food safety regulations and hygiene standards.
  • Conduct inspections and certification of food businesses and processors.
  • Monitor imported and exported food for compliance with international standards.
  • Promote public awareness on food safety and nutrition.
  • Collaborate with regional partners and agencies to strengthen food systems.

Monitors the safety of food entering or leaving Tonga to meet trade and health standards.

Recent Initiatives

  • Launched the National Food Safety Awareness Campaign 2025.
  • Implemented digital traceability systems for local food producers.
  • Collaborated with FAO and WHO on regional food safety training.
